Jon Bernthal is known for his role in “The Walking Dead” – a show that centers around the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. How Jon Bernthal became a prolific actor
Although Jon Bernthal was born in Washington D.C. and grew up there, he’s now a Venice, California resident, enjoying the mild fall and winter temperatures of the area.
Although he’s known for his body, he’s quite the actor and has a strong background in theater. He attended The Moscow Art Theatre School in Moscow, Russia. At that point, he was also part of Europe’s professional baseball federation. As he was performing in Moscow, he gained the recognition of a Harvard University director. He then earned the opportunity to attend the Institute for Advanced Theatre Training. He graduated in 2002 and was in more than 30 plays since. Some of these plays were productions of his theater company, Fovea Floods. While it’s no longer in existence today, Jon has taken another route in his acting career — TV shows and movies.
What some may not know about him is before he took the opportunity with Harvard, he was a college student prior to that in Saratoga Springs, New York, but he eventually dropped out. That didn’t stop on his journey into acting, though.

During his adolescents, he was known for getting into fights. Some of them even involved weapons. When he was in his 30s, he got into a serious fight as the result of someone following him home while he was minding his business and walking his dog. The fight was serious enough that it almost led him to prison. The man he was in a fight with, hit his head on the pavement. It rendered the man unconscious.
His father was a lawyer and eventually was on the board of directors for the Humane Society. Perhaps that’s why he has such a love for animals. He has three pit bulls. Two of them made the opportunity to make a movie appearance in 2012 on “Rampart.”

He wasn’t always necessarily ripped. He bulked up as a result of the movie/show roles he was talking on. For instance, he had to get incredibly ripped to be “The Punisher” in season two of “Daredevil.” If you’re unfamiliar with this show, he was a superhero in it. What Does Jon Bernthal’s Diet Look Like?

We should note that he sticks to a strict diet to ensure he can maintain that shape. He focuses on eating a healthy diet overall that’s free of sugary, fried, and processed foods as well as dairy.
While many pro athletes eat many small meals per day, Jon eats three large meals per day. He also has three snacks in between meals every day to keep his metabolism running. What Does the Jon Bernthal Workout Look Like?
As you can imagine, it takes a lot of time in the gym to look like that. And with the Jon Bernthal workout, he definitely puts in the time. This is just an average workout for him, though. When he’s prepping for an acting role, it’s more intense.
Monday
On Mondays, he’s doing a lower-body workout. He’s getting some cardiovascular exercise and working on those leg muscles. He kicks off his rigorous week of exercise with a warm-up consisting of 20 minutes on the treadmill. He then does two circuits of exercises.
In circuit one, he does squats, leg presses, calf raises, and hamstring curls. In this workout, he does three sets of all these exercises. He does 12 repetitions of both the calf raises and squats. On the other hand, he does 10 reps of both the leg presses and hamstring curls.
In circuit two, he does the following three times:
- Burpees – 20 reps
- Sit-ups – 40 reps
- Pull-ups – 10 reps
- Front squats – 30 reps
- Heavy punching bag – one minute
Tuesday
Mr. Bernthal does Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) training on Tuesdays. This helps him stay in shape for roles that require fight scenes. He starts this day off with a 20-minute ride on an exercise bike. Once his heart is pumping and muscles are warmed up, he does an hour of MMA training.
Wednesday
On Wednesdays, you can find Jon getting to business and working on those arm muscles. His upper body workout consists of the following, all performed with three sets of 10 repetitions:
- Incline bench press
- Bench press
- Overhead tricep extensions
- Seated row
- Wide-grip pull-ups
Thursday
On Thursdays, he’s working on his entire body, and oh what a body it is says many ladies and gentlemen. Jon performs his workout in two circuits.
In the first circuit, he does three sets of 10 reps of these exercises:
- Preacher curls
- Arnold press
- Hamstring curls
- Pike push-up
- Barbell shrugs
The second circuit consists of three sets of 10 reps of the following:
- Military press
- Lat pulldowns
- Close-grip pull-ups
- Deadlifts
- Front raises
Friday
Friday is another cardio day, but this one is only focusing on aerobic exercise, nothing else. He does exercises, such as
- Jogging
- Elliptical
- Stationary bike
Saturday
This is his last day of exercise before taking a breather and letting his muscles recover. And he doesn’t slack whatsoever.
His Saturday regimen begins with a 20-minute treadmill jog to warm up. He then does resistance training, which includes:
- One-minute planks
- Pike push-ups – 12 reps
- Jump squats – 10 reps
- Burpees – 15 reps
- Dips – 20 reps
- Push-ups – 10 reps
- V-ups – 15 reps
Besides the burpees and planks, he does three sets of all the other exercises. For the burpees, he only performs one set.
Sunday
In the Jon Bernthal workout, Sunday is a recovery day. It’s a day he spends with his wife and gives his body a break. He still maintains his healthy eating, though.
